BEAST

“What is that thing?” Beast asked his little witch.

“A raccoon.” The pretty little witch blinked at him and snuggled the little animal close to her chest. She’d magicked her hand clean and now cooed at the three rodent-like balls of masked fluff in her arms. “Aren’t they precious? They’re hungry. We have to feed them before we set out.”

“Feed them?” Beast asked slightly horrified. “What do they eat?” About a dozen horrible options came to mind right off.

“They’re babies,” she responded. “Lead me to the food room again, please?”

“Find it yourself,” he growled.

The bird flapped near the little witch, as if afraid to perch while she held the wriggling gray bundles of fur. “I wouldn’t anger her while she’s in fiercely protective mama bear mode,” he advised the Beast. “Just show her to the kitchen, Beast.”

Beast opened and closed his mouth a couple times. He could still remember a time when he was a prince and his words were law. When people fawned over him, fearful of his wrath. When they catered to his every...

It had been an awful long time since anyone did more than run away in terror at his visage, so perhaps he should forget those days and make do with the fact that Iola and her band of merry animals weren’t afraid of him. “Fine,” he muttered. “Follow me.”

He led them to the kitchen, where various serving implements and towels fluttered around, fixing three tiny bottles for the baby raccoons. Apparently, if his kitchen was to be trusted, baby raccoons would enjoy a blend of banana, strawberry, ground up rice and water. Iola struggled to feed the three creatures at once, but after watching her try to juggle three bottles and three animals, Beast got frustrated. He plucked one of the bottles from her and held it while the tiny animal happily slurped. Beast was amazed at how fast the little animal emptied the bottle, even if he stopped to cough a few times because he was horking the food too fast.

“They’re almost cute,” he admitted to Iola, still looking at the little masked bandit. The raccoon twitched his ears toward Beast, eyes widening slightly, but he didn’t stop eating.

“They’re adorable, aren’t you?” cooed Iola, snuggling the Beast close.

“That’s her gift, you know?” the raven admitted to Beast in an aside. “She is wonderful with animals, especially baby ones.”

“Like some fairy tale princess,” Beast muttered, trying to be humorous. But it fell flat, because Iola did look like some strange princess... with her fluffy blue gown, otherworldly gray hair and elfish features.

Once the creatures were fed, Beast decided that although he might even have enjoyed spending time with the little witch and her menagerie, he needed to get back to business. “I brought the cuffs,” he said swinging them on a fingertip.

Iola rolled her eyes, but continued to focus on the small nest she was building from blankets for the raccoon babies. “You still don’t trust me,” she muttered. “You thought I left you behind, didn’t you?”

He met her lovely eyes and thought about lying.
